PROF. BOOTSY ON JIMI HENDRIX AND THE FUNK CONNECTION
Professor Bootsy welcomes another living legend to Funk U - the great Jack Bruce!!! Not only is Professor Jack a phenomenal bassist, but his vocals and songwriting abilities make him the inspiration of countless artists and songs that followed him.
PROF. HANSFORD ROWE ON A RIGHT HAND SLAPPING WARM-UP UP (PLAYING EXERCISE)
Prof. Rowe is not a huge slap and pop player, but it is something that he likes to have in his "bag". To keep his right hand warm and fresh he utilizes the following technique to get loose.
PROF. VERDINE WHITE: A WORD FOR THE BEGINNING PLAYER
Verdine White had one main thing he wanted to get out of the way as the year began and that was making sure that students understood that PRACTICE should be coupled with LISTENING. As we all know, that's one important component that Bootsy has stressed in his lectures, and Victor Wooten has stressed as well throughout his stay at Funk U. In this segment Verdine wants to get it out of the way early. Practice must be coupled with Listening for a true musical education.
PROF. HANSFORD ROWE: AN INTRODUCTION AND THE INFLUENCES
Hansford Rowe is one of the fusion world's most interesting bass players. Having gained worldwide attention at a young age through his playing in Gong, Hansford set a path and approach to the instrument that is unique to say the least. We are excited to have him join the Funk U. groovement, and in this clip he introduces himself and the music that changed his life.
PROF. LARRY GRAHAM: THE BASICS OF SLY STONE (PLAYING EXERCISE)
Professor Larry Graham discusses how he came to meet Sly Stone and the formation of their group. He also demonstrates one of the iconic bass lines that established their signature sound.
PROF. BOOTSY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF JACK BRUCE
Professor Bootsy welcomes another living legend to Funk U - the great Jack Bruce!!! Not only is Professor Jack a phenomenal bassist, but his vocals and songwriting abilities make him the inspiration of countless artists and songs that followed him.
PROF. JACK BRUCE: THE BACKSTORY
Professor Jack Bruce gives quite possibly the best and most honest reason why he was attracted to bass - it made his groin feel good!!! Professor Jack gives us a brief history of the various instruments and styles he played at the beginning of his career.
PROF. VERDINE WHITE: ON THE ONE & SHINING STAR (PLAYING EXERCISE)
Professor Verdine White kicks off his lessons at Funk U with a discussion of the One and demonstrates how the One drives the Earth, Wind & Fire classic Shining Star.
PROF. BOOTSY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF VERDINE WHITE
Professor Bootsy welcomes a true bass icon to Funk U - Verdine White of Earth, Wind, & Fire. EWF's catalog of number 1 hits provided a large portion of the Soundtrack of the 70's and 80's, that they still perform with passion and precision to this day.
JANIE HENDRIX: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HENDRIX FAMILY - PART 1 & 2
One of the new features of Funk U Year 2 is bringing in Special Guests that are not instructors, but exceptional figures in the music world. We're thrilled to have Jimi Hendrix's sister joining us in month 1 to share with us a unique insight into her brother's legacy and the business involved with keeping his fire burning bright.
PROF. RON CARTER: LECTURE ON AUDITIONING
Please welcome the great Sir Ron Carter as our latest guest Professor here at Funk U. As someone who has worked more than most other bassists on the planet, we wanted Professor Carter to share some wisdom on the process of auditioning.
PROF. BOOTSY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF RON CARTER
Professor Bootsy welcomes a true bass icon to Funk U - Verdine White of Earth, Wind, & Fire. EWF's catalog of number 1 hits provided a large portion of the Soundtrack of the 70's and 80's, that they still perform with passion and precision to this day.
PROF. BOOTSY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF LARRY GRAHAM
Professor Bootsy discusses the importance of Larry Graham and what he means to the world of bass. Without Larry Graham's thumb, the exploration of our instrument would only be a fraction of what it is today.
PROF. LARRY GRAHAM: THE ORIGIN OF SLAPPING (LECTURE AND PLAYING EXERCISE)
Professor Larry Graham shares the tale of how he became a bass player out of necessity. It was also necessity that led to the creation of Thumpin' and Pluckin' or what is today called Slapping and Popping. Without a drummer, Professor Graham had to hold down the rhythm section all by himself - by mimicking the kick drum with his thumb and the snare with a Pluck, an entirely new approach to bass was born.
PROF. HARDGROOVE ON HENDRIX
One of the themes we will be exploring this year is the music, influence, power and mastery of Jimi Hendrix. Not only was Jimi a huge influence on music in general, but Funk music in particular. Being as today is the 4th of July, we thought it fitting to start our study of Prof. Hendrix with Prof. Hardgroove discussing the musical freedom and choices that Jimi Hendrix made.
PROF. BOOTSY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF STANLEY CLARKE
Professor Bootsy is proud to introduce the living bass legend, Professor Stanley Clarke. He shares with us just how important Professor Clarke is to the world of bass and how special it is to have him here at Funk U.
